The Pretty Paper Shop and the Perfect Present…

One of the things I love most about London is that you are guaranteed to find a specialist shop for almost anything… as far as I was concerned Sylvanian families had remained in the 80′s along with My Little Ponies, Thundercats and the Avocado Baby , however just around the corner from my flat is a shop dedicated to the fuzzy collectables! It looks a wee bit desolate in this photo as I took it early this morning on my way to work, however the shop is very much a bustling little haven of Sylvanian fanatics at the weekend!

When I started Scruffy Starling I was keen to find a specialist paper shop with beautiful and unique designs to complement the recycled paper that I would be using from magazines. After a quick google search I found Shepherd Falkiners which conveniently turned out to be a 10 minute walk from my office – that’s another great thing about London – nothing’s ever too far away. Shephard Falkiners specialises in fine paper and bookbinding and they have a gorgeous shop a few minutes walk from Holburn Station. In a similar way to a fabric shop there is something particularly mesmerising about so many beautiful patterns and colours all stacked side by side and on top of each other – in fact I wish that so many of the papers were also in fabric form. In addition to all the papers, there are lovely gifts such as hand bound books, letterwriting sets and greetings cards. The shop also runs book binding classes and has a basement filled with the more practical bookbinding supplies.

The address is 76 Southampton Row, Bloomsbury – a few minutes walk from Holburn Station.

And while you’re in the area, you may as well dander to nearby Lambs Conduit Street – this has numerous pretty little eateries, galleries and design shops however I would really reccommend taking a peek into Persephone Books - should you have a particular penchant for neglected 20th Century classics written mainly by women, then this is the place for you!

Persephone books has a collection of 96 titles written ‘by women, for women and about women’ which have been beautifully reprinted in a dove grey sleeve each with exquisite endpapers specifically chosen to complement the book. I think they make sophisticated and thoughtful presents and helpfully Persephone have put together advice for choosing the Perfect Present!
